This training will equip Marriage Prep mentors to utilize relationship building, modeling, and topical discussions to play a key role in helping new couples build God-glorifying marriages.

Here is what pastor JD had to say in one of his most recent blogs…

On Sunday we asked our church to give, sacrificially, to the “Christmas in August” offering to the church planting work of the IMB. Each year, at the Summit we give $1000’s to International Church Planting through our Christmas Mission offering. These gifts join with gifts from churches all around the country to fund our missionaries through an organization called the International Mission Board. This year, due to the recession gifts fell short of the $170 million goal by about $30 million. The result is that some of our church planters will not be able to stay their second year, and some of those in the pipeline at our church are going to have to delay going.

So, what’s happening is across the nation we’re asking churches to do a “Christmas in August” offering… make up for the shortfall. The bottom line is that all of us have less now, so we are able to give less. That said, I do think that the global progress of the Gospel should be the LAST thing to suffer. I think we should consider making radical changes to our lifestyles before we see missionaries have to come home.

In case you need some more motivation… the below is a very stirring letter from one of our church planters, regarding some recent cutbacks at the International Mission Board due to the economic recession.

The 2008 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering goal was $170 million. As you may already know, the total receipts fell approximately $29 million short of that goal… the single biggest drop from one year to the next in the history of the offering. When just looking at those numbers it’s pretty overwhelming. However, it all comes into perspective when you realize that entire shortfall could be made up by each SB giving only about $2. That’s giving up one cup of coffee, one hamburger, one Route 44 from Sonic, one tots and cheese… for those of you that know what I’m talking about! Our missionary-force is having to be reduced by almost 700 personnel. That is a pretty sobering figure.

Our denomination was born out of a passion for the nations to hear the Gospel. Sometimes it is a good thing to step back and remember where you came from. We realize that these are difficult economic times for everyone, and we certainly want to show gratitude and appreciation of the funding we have received. However, God has not called us (SB’s) out to wait on the sidelines until the economy recovers.

During the company’s meetings last week, we were informed that one of the most disappointing things about this situation is not the amount of LMCO shortfall, but the fact that there has been little, if any, real outrage from SB’s that our ISC program has been suspended. The ISC program is the program that allows married couples or singles who are outside of their 20′s to go overseas for 2 or 3 years.

If the financial crunch had hit before the team I’m on left, we would have 1 career couple here, and the other 5 adults on the team, including me, would be gone. When October of next year hits, we will all be gone, and chances are the one remaining career unit here will not be able to stay in our city. Generally we try not to have anyone alone in a city, and I assume this would be the case with us. Please pray for them in this time, and please do anything you can to help out during this hard time.

I know this is kind of sobering, but so was the email that said we were going to have to bring missionaries home early. Thanks SO MUCH for your support, prayer and otherwise.

On wednesday me, Josh McDonald and Jason Gaston got out of the office and took a roadtrip to visit New Spring Church in Anderson, SC. On our way there we stopped by IKEA in Charlotte, NC to buy some furniture to complete the WOH teachers lounge project we began at Eno Valley Elementary.

Notice the decorating skills and color patterns selected by yours truly…amazing huh? We were able to stay under budget by getting 2 couches, 2 chairs, 4 end tables, 1 coffee table and a giant rug. Make sure you come visit Eno Valley Elementry and see the completed lounge the Summit Church worked so hard on during Week of Hope. Don’t forget we are going to help teachers move back into their classrooms on August 17 and we will be serving them Chick-Fil-A breakfast on August 24. Help us get to know the teachers, facultyand staff as we continue to love on them!

1.) Daily Interactions with the “Chapter of the Day” will be posted on the new Summit Blog found at Summitrdu.com

2.) Read one chapter a day for 62 days (you will read the book of Proverbs twice)

3.) Memorize two passages from Proverbs together with your family, roomate or Summit Life Group (3:5-6 & 3:19-26)

What If Everyone Mattered?

Last week, Pastor Rick introduced a new 3 week series that we are doing at all Summit campuses. “What if everyone mattered” is the underlying vision for this years week of hope. As followers of Christ we believe that everyone matters because we have been created in the image of God. Unfortunately, we are often guilty of thinking to highly of ourselves and not remembering where we were when Christ came near to us.

God has placed us in RDU and it wasn’t by mistake. He placed us here to put his glory on display and to think that we get to be a part of that is amazing. At the Summit, we have created an annual opportunity for us to serve together as a church. This year the week of hope offers more than 2100 volunteer opportunities and we have a waiting list. For whatever reason we have had several ministries (and public schools) contact us and ask for us to help them with some specific needs. You could attribute this to the economy or maybe it is the Lord opening up doors for ministry here in our own backyard.

Hope for RDU is going to be July 5th-12th. We want EVERYBODY doing SOMETHING to impact our community. We want you to serve as an individual, as a family as a small group or as a campus. Specifically as a campus, we have adopted Eno Valley Elementary this year and we are going to love on the teachers, students and parents by giving the school a makeover. We will be power washing, cleaning, mulching, and building bookcases. There might even be a surprise project or two! To ensure that we take care of all the needs, Please register for this opportnity now. In addition to serving Eno Valley Elementary, we will be throwing a huge appreciation party for the men and women that put their lives on the line to make our city safe on Saturday morning 7/11. We are inviting all active (and retired) police, fire, EMS, sheriff, highway patrol and Duke campus police to bring their families out and enjoy themselves. This event will be taking place at the Durham Public Schools training facility at Hillandale Road and Carver Street. We will be serving lunch and we have several inflatable games which will ensure that each family has a great time. We need all types of people to help staff this event as we seek to display our appreciation to these amazing men and women.
